Subject: ptmr0 vs rptmr
I have been thinking about the repeated bafflement of people
who first get the "wierd error" when they run the wrong
times.sty, and then find that psfonts.map has no ptmr0 mapping
in it.
The -P ptm convention which I packed up in lw35nfss seems
to me to be the best way to go about things. Otherwise
psfonts.map gets to look like my old EDU address list for
TeXhax---much too long. But clearly it is one of the least
understood conventions in dvips (I have sometimes forgotten
about it at tiresome moments.) Can anyone think of a way of
drawing people's attention to it more effectively?
I am convinced that as our font libraries get richer, and they
will, even though it may take a couple of years, it will be
far better to encourage the use of short, specific mapping packages
rather than one humungous psfonts.map. If I'm wrong about that
I can probably be convinced, but if not, it would be a good idea
to start getting the idea across.
As a start, I propose a short informational contribution to
TeXhax, reminding people of the convention. It certainly won't
get everyone, possibly not even a majority, but I can't
think of anywhere else that would be better.
